Avaya IP Office can be used to refer to a phone system that consists of a server as well as an operating system. The IP Office 500 was supplied as a self-contained 2RU (rack unit), appliance. IP Office Release 4.0 was the operating system.

Each bay can hold two modules. IP Office 500 comes with four bays at the front. Avaya refers to the module’s “mezzanine” as the secondary card that sits above it. This allows you to mix and match modules to fit your environment. You can use ISDN, standard telephone lines, ATM module for dedicated data connections between sites, and, last but not least, dedicated ports to connect Avaya digital phones.

If you’re familiar with VoIP configurations, setting up IP Office is easy. IP Office Manager is a client software that configures all aspects of the server. Its interface is similar to Microsoft Outlook. The windows and menus are laid out in an intuitive and simple to use way. The main headings are located on the left, while the menus provide more detail.

IP Office’s greatest strength is its ability to scale. Start with just one server and one or two modules. As your business grows, you can add additional modules and expansion units. To fully take advantage of IP Office’s multi-server integration, you can have up 15 servers in a single group. This allows you to automatically manage all devices from one server. You can add more servers to this group, but you will have to administrate them separately with different users. Different types of phones and servers can still communicate seamlessly using IP telephony protocols.
